The Quick Answer
Let your room set the limit, then choose by who plays. Our 7 to 7.5 ft tables suit quick, casual games and need a room of about 16 ft x 13 ft. Our 8 to 8.5 ft tables give more seasoned players longer shots and need about 17 ft x 13.5 ft. For smaller rooms, our compact 4.5 and 5.5 ft tables need about 14.5 ft x 12 ft to 15 ft x 12.5 ft.
The right pool table isn't the biggest one you can fit. It's the one your room holds comfortably and your family and friends gather around every week. Here's how our sizes compare, and how to choose between them.

How to Choose a Pool Table Size
- Start with your room. It sets the largest table you can play comfortably, with about 5 feet from the playing surface to the wall on every side. The room checker in What Size Room Do You Need for a Pool Table? shows which of our tables fit yours. If space is tight, our compact 5.5 ft Urban and 4.5 ft Coventry 4-in-1 fit rooms from about 14.5 ft x 12 ft.
- Think about who plays most. New and casual players: 7 to 7.5 ft, the bar and pub standard for quick, casual games. More seasoned players: 8 to 8.5 ft, the home standard, with longer shots.
-
Decide what else the room does. If it's also your dining room, a 3-in-1 dining pool table (the Monteray, Prescott, and Westmont at 7 ft, or the Monteray Slate-Tech at 7.5 ft) converts between a dining table and a pool table, with a ping pong top in between. For a family game room, the Coventry 4-in-1 puts four games in one compact footprint.

Match the style. For a classic look with rich tones and time-honored proportions, consider the Arlington (8 and 8.5 ft) and Belmont (7 ft). For open-concept, design-forward rooms, the Camden (7 ft), Urban (5.5 and 7 ft, and the 8 ft Urban Slate-Tech), Blackstone (7.5 ft), and Ashford (8.5 ft) bring architectural lines that read as furniture first.

7 ft or 8 ft: Which Is Right for You?
Most buyers end up choosing between these two sizes. Here's how ours compare.
| 7 ft | 8 ft | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Quick, casual games | More seasoned players and longer shots |
| Playing surface | 72 x 36 to 76 x 38 in on most models | 84 x 42 in |
| Room from | 16 ft x 13 ft | 17 ft x 13.5 ft |
| Weight | 187 to 226 lb; 364 to 366 lb as a 3-in-1 dining set | 252 to 353 lb |
| Our tables | Belmont, Camden, Pinecrest, Urban; Monteray, Prescott, and Westmont dining tables | Arlington, Urban Slate-Tech |
If your room fits an 8 ft table with full clearance and your players want longer shots, go 8 ft. The Arlington also comes in 8.5 ft. If your room is closer to 16 ft x 13 ft, or the table will host more casual games than serious matches, a 7 ft table plays comfortably and leaves more space to move around it. Compare the Playing Surface, Not Just the Size Name
A pool table's size name is shorthand, and brands don't all measure it the same way. Our size names describe each table's approximate overall length: the 8 ft Arlington is about 96 in from end to end, around an 84 x 42 in playing surface. When you compare tables, ours or anyone else's, compare the playing surface. It's what you actually play on, and it's what sets the room you need.
Our playing surfaces drawn to scale, with a 57 in cue for reference. Moving from 7 ft to 8 ft adds a foot of playing length and 6 in of width.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a 7 ft or 8 ft pool table better?
Neither is better for everyone. A 7 ft table suits quick, casual games, and most of ours fit a room of about 16 ft x 13 ft. An 8 ft table gives more seasoned players longer shots and needs a room of about 17 ft x 13.5 ft. If your room fits both, choose by who plays most.
What size pool table is best for beginners?
A 7 to 7.5 ft table is a comfortable place to start. It's the size for quick, casual games, and most of our 7 ft tables fit a room of about 16 ft x 13 ft, so there's space for new players to move around the table.
What is the smallest Barrington pool table?
The 4.5 ft Coventry 4-in-1, with a 51.25 x 22.25 in playing surface. It also plays air hockey, foosball, and ping pong, and fits a room of about 14.5 ft x 12 ft. Our smallest dedicated pool table is the 5.5 ft Urban, with a 57.9 x 28.3 in playing surface that fits a room of about 15 ft x 12.5 ft.
What is the difference between an 8 ft and an 8.5 ft pool table?
Our 8 ft tables have an 84 x 42 in playing surface and need a room of about 17 ft x 13.5 ft. Our 8.5 ft tables have an 88 x 44 in playing surface and need about 17.5 ft x 13.5 ft. That's 4 in more playing length for half a foot more room. The Arlington comes in both sizes.
What size is a regulation pool table?
Professional tournaments are played on 9 ft tables with a 100 x 50 in playing surface, which need a room of about 18.5 ft x 14 ft. Few homes have that much space, so most home tables are 7 to 8.5 ft. Our largest, the 8.5 ft Arlington and Ashford, have an 88 x 44 in playing surface.
